Sunscreen and After-Sun Care
Vitamin D From The Sun Is Necessary for Health
Research has proven the benefits of 20 minutes of unprotected sun daily to soak up Vit D. Vitamin D from the sun is necessary for optimal health. It’s an anti-inflammatory, protects us from various cancers, boosts immunity, helps us absorb and retain calcium, and has been proven to boost happiness.
But if you’re a person who needs sun protection after those 20 mins, I have listed safe sunscreens below. Make sure the Active Ingredient in your sunscreen is Zinc Oxide. Use lotions only (no sprays), and make sure your sunscreen is a broad Spectrum, protecting you from UVA and UVB rays.
Not All Sunscreens Are Created Equal or Are Healthy To Use
There are many sunscreens on the market that contain carcinogens, endocrine and hormone disrupters, and harmful chemicals that weaken the immune system. Here are a few to avoid:
Aminobenzoic Acid (PABA)
Avobenzone
Hoomosalate
Parabens
Phthlates
Phenoxyethanol
Trolamine Salicylate
Octisalate
Ocinoxate
Octocrylene
Oxybenzone
Here’s a list of approved, safe and healthy sunscreens. I personally use Babo and Badger on my body, and Juice Beauty and Become on my face. These brands offer scent/fragrance free for babies and children, and I recommend these for adults with sensitive skin as well.
Babo and Love Sun Body can be purchased at Whole Foods, Amazon, and their websites. My favorite facial sun protection is from a line called Become and can be purchased at the link below. I love this for my face because it is powerful, lightweight and doesn’t clog pores.
These can be purchased at Whole Foods, Amazon, and their websites. My favorite facial sun protection with a tint is the gray tube on the right and it’s from Juice Beauty - it’s lightweight, evens skin tone, and protects my skin beautifully.
The three above products are excellent for after-sun care. The left and center, both by Babo, are great for the body. The one on right, by Become, is excellent for the face.
When in doubt, please check any body or home cleaning product on a site called EWG. The Environmental Working Group is an organization that empowers us with breakthrough research so we can make informed choices and live a healthy life in a healthy environment. You can type any chemical (found in the ingredient list on a body product or cleaning product) and find out from the EWG if it’s safe or not. I utilize the EWG often.
Opting for safe, clean, and holistic sunscreens is about safeguarding our overall health and decreasing the toxic load we are exposed to daily. The abovementioned brands exemplify this commitment because they prioritize natural and safe ingredients without compromising efficacy. By making informed choices and embracing these sunscreens, we shield ourselves from sun damage and contribute to a more sustainable and healthier future for ourselves and the planet.
